Namely: yes, there will be a reboot, set for some point in 2019; and yes, the licence from Hasbro has been renewed, the ending happening at the same time as the renewal was a coincidence at best. REad the relevant extracts from the piece below, and head here for the full story.
A couple of quick questions on licenses. You mentioned how you’re wrapping up your Hasbro storyline. Was that done in conjunction with the time for renewal of the license?Yeah. It’s funny, I’ve seen some commentary on that. We’ve been in business with Hasbro for 12 years. We love the relationship. They are a great partner. We try to deliver the best possible books month in and month out on not just Transformers, but on GI Joe and on My Little Pony. We had a great Jem and the Holograms series. Jem will be back. They’re probably going to say, “Why is Greg pre‑announcing these things?” In any event, no. Sometimes, it’s easy to extrapolate incorrect information, so no, the Transformers line and the other titles continue.

We’ve got three monthly Marvel books as of January 2019, the opportunity to do some specials, maybe one‑shots and some other things with Marvel. They’re very excited about it, we’re very excited about it.
Our Transformers reboot for 2019 is going to be great.
We’ve got some pretty exciting projects on the Star Trek front.
[Teenage Mutant Ninja] Turtles is heading to issue 100. We have the longest‑running Turtles series in the history of the brand. The brand’s 35 years old next year.

Black Bumblebee wrote:Figured. The reboot is pretty much to get rid of all that “shared universe” stuff that completely ruined all the comic brands. Couldn’t reboot one without rebooting the others… so… BOOM, grand reset button.
Actually from what’s been said it looked like it was always the plan to end things once barber and Roberts were finished, so the badly implementated hasbroverse isn’t to blame for this.
I can still see it working but they need to have a better plan in place from the get go

John was planning on wrapping up his story this year and contacted James and said “I think I figured out how much I have left and then I’m done”. James said he was just looking at his outline and figured out he too wanted to wrap up his run. John contacted hasbro and told them his and James intentions and through the talks they decided maybe it’s time to conclude the entire IDW-verse. 13 years is a helluva co to unity. Longest running transformers continuity.

John also revealed he didn’t expect to be writing RID/TF/OP this long. He said usually in an ongoing youre on for maybe 8-12 issues and you move on but the impact he and James have done has been amazing and they got to go for over 6 years now.

Nexus Knight wrote:Probably an opinion that many will disagree with, but I hope they bring the shared universe back in a heater fashion. I absolutely loved the idea, because it showed there was more than my favorite franchise there. Everything they did had consequences elsewhere. And I loved those types of stories. Plus, I got introduced to some new stuff that I now enjoy (namely M.A.S.K. and Micronauts).
I enjoyed the shared universe. I liked revolution, revolutionaries, Rom vs transformers and I’m sorry people but I enjoyed visionaries vs transformers.
I enjoy comics and in my honest opinion the vocal minority about the shared universe just reminded me of kids playing with their transformers and one kid came by and said “I just have g.i. Joes can I play?” And then other kids were bringing in their toys and the kids playing with transformers just got pissy and said they won’t bring their transformers to play anymore because everyone ruined their thing with their other It’s.
I don’t know anything about the other solo series or franchises but I really enjoyed going to the IDW wiki and learning about them.

This is part of it, however, the Hasbro U ending in its entirety was a business decision. That’s why it went from “something else” to “Unicron”. Creative teams have been finished with their contributions plenty of times (Furman, McCarthy, Costa, Scott, et al), the reset button on the whole huge thing is absolutely business driven.
It’s cool with me if folks choose not to believe that. I can wait for vindication on this after some years pass and the parties involved can really say what’s what, hell I’m sure I’ve “telephone gamed” this on accident somehow anyway Everything everyone else has mentioned is a factor too, if it helps!

Pick up the Micronauts Omnibus book tomorrow. If you liked that stuff, I think you’ll really enjoy what they did. It sputters a bit in the middle but on the whole it’s an extremely fun series! Even brings the “toybox come to life concept” close to literally true in one issue. “A fine weapon” – Acroyear describing a… well you’ll find out

I suspect, if the writers have any intelligence, that they will find a way to maintain the characters and concepts from old-IDW in new-IDW, I mean Windblade certainly has been a key part of RID (2015) and us set for the Cyberverse cartoon (and have Hasbro really run out of name already?) so I bet the things that you, and I, love about IDW will endure.

One thing (or several, depending on your view). I loathe GI Joe, ROM, MASK, Visionaries ect in my Transformers comic. Combining these into some turdstorm of a collective universe comes across as an assumption you’re going to be into all of the Hasbro ‘male’ fandoms. The transformers vs GI mini series was fun, in its bonkers way, but the regular appearance of Joes ect in mainline makes my eyes roll back so hard I can see my brain.
So please, IDW – I just want Transformers to be Transformers. No GI Joe, My Little Pony ect in my Transformers universe or I’ll probably stop reading.

Well that was also under Andy Schmidt who was legitimately making some bad calls and just wanting to “BOOST SALES BOOST SALES! New soft reboot here! New soft reboot there! Focus on 1984! That’s what people know!’
I don’t know I mean John says it was their choice to put it to a close. He said in the interview him and James went to the guy that works for Hasbro and intermediates between Hasbro and IDW and said they were planning on just concluding their stories and passing the torch but through the talks they pitched maybe just concluding the entire universe and Hasbro said sure.

They’ve set themselves an incredibly high standard to reach though. I doubt anyone who was there at the beginning thought they would do a 13 year run which at the heart of it was one big story with many, MANY branches. It gave us old characters through fresh eyes, it gave us lesser known characters who finally were given character, it gave us new characters, and they’re wrapping it up with a neat little bow on top (hopefully).
To top all of that, they’re really going to have to step up.
Or they could just become Marvel/DC and churn out a monthly book that really doesn’t do much other than throw in some shock value with the death/return of some character that’s quickly forgotten about in two months.
And if they want to try the shared universe again, this is a good chance. Let each line establish itself before bringing them together, but make it flow naturally. Don’t just force them together, that didn’t work out too well last time.
